Our verdict

A mall jewelry chain since 1924, owned by Signet like Kay and Jared — 30 days to return with a free label, Affirm financing, free cleaning in its stores and a lifetime guarantee on chipped or lost diamonds, but no general warranty against defects, paid resizing and repairs, and 'certified' diamonds whose grading lab isn't named.

Best for

  • Shoppers who want to see a ring in a mall store, return it free by mail if needed, and spread the cost with Affirm1,2,3

Not ideal for

  • Anyone who wants a written warranty against defects without paying for a protection plan1,2,4,5,6,7,8
  • Buyers who want a named grading lab for their diamond4,6,7,9,10,11

The bottom line. Zales started as one store in Texas in 1924 and now has more than 400 stores in North America1; it has belonged to Signet Jewelers since 201412, and its terms name Signet as the company you deal with13. Online returns get 30 days and a free pre-printed label, with the refund going back to your card minus delivery charges2. You can pay with cards, PayPal or Affirm3,6, and its stores clean and inspect jewelry for free6. A Lifetime Diamond Commitment replaces a diamond that chips, breaks or falls out in normal wear on diamond purchases of $200 or more4. It scores in the ‘caution’ range because that commitment is the only free warranty we found1,2,4,5,6,7: it covers diamonds only and lapses unless you bring the piece in every six months4; repairs to the metal are covered only by a plan you buy separately5,8, and resizing is done for a price, after an estimate7. Its ‘certified’ diamonds don’t name a grading lab on the pages we read4,6,7,9,10,11, and shipping insurance isn’t mentioned2,13,14. Store ratings on Google range from 4.4 to 4.715,16, but Trustpilot shows 2 out of 5 from 208 reviews17.

Jewelry can be returned within 30 days of the purchase (shipment) date and exchanged within 60 days, but exchanges have to be done in a store2. Online orders can be returned by mail with a free pre-printed label, or at any store2,9, in their original condition with packaging and paperwork2; if you return a ring that was sized to order, the sizing fee is refunded too2.

Each return is inspected, and the refund goes back to your original payment method minus delivery charges, in about five business days2; we found no restocking fee2,6,7,9. Custom designs, engraved or altered jewelry, special-order watches, gift cards and protection-plan replacements can’t be returned2; the help center’s list adds ear-piercing earrings6. Shipping & delivery

Zales offers expedited shipping by default, plus express and standard options6. Product pages mention a free shipping offer that ‘may be modified or terminated at any time’9, but the pages we saved don’t give its threshold; shipping to a store for pickup is always free14, and most orders of $5,000 or less can go to a UPS Access Point6.

We found no mention of shipping insurance or a signature on delivery2,13,14. If a package goes missing or shows as delivered but isn’t there, you answer a few questions online and a claim ticket opens; Zales says it will investigate6,7, but not for packages shipped more than 60 days earlier6.

Warranty & aftercare

Zales’ free warranty is its Lifetime Diamond Commitment, which comes with diamond purchases of $200 or more: if a diamond chips, breaks or falls out of its setting in normal use, any Zales store replaces it with one of similar value and quality at no charge4. It doesn’t cover previously owned diamond jewelry, colored gemstones, watches, theft or loss4, and repairs needed to secure a diamond in its setting are paid or go through the optional protection plan4. We found no general warranty against manufacturing defects1,2,4,5,6,7.

For the metal, Zales sells add-on Lifetime Protection Plans, which exclude diamonds and gemstones5; a plan is bought separately and can be refunded within 30 days, minus any services used8. It also offers jewelry insurance through Lavalier, at ‘typically 1-2%’ of the jewelry’s value5. Repairs and resizing are done in stores after an estimate7.

Any Zales store cleans and inspects jewelry for free4,6 and does appraisals6. A Zales diamond counts at 100% of what you paid toward a new piece that costs at least twice as much4, and Zales also buys gold jewelry through a gold exchange6.

Keep your inspection record
The diamond commitment lapses unless you bring the piece to Zales every six months for cleaning and inspection, along with your inspection record4. Miss one, and a chipped or lost diamond may no longer be replaced free, so keep each inspection receipt.

What Zales sells & what it costs

Zales’ sitemap lists at least 20,000 product pages28, including previously owned jewelry sold alongside new pieces29. In the 15 product pages our sampler read, prices ran from $99 to $3,149.99, with engagement rings from $1,00028.

Diamonds sold as ‘certified’ come with a certificate that includes a photo and description of the diamond and ‘can be used for insurance purposes’9; Celebration Lux diamonds are also laser-inscribed with a certification number10, and certified lab-grown diamonds include a certification card11. None of the pages we read names the grading lab4,6,7,9,10,11.

Product pages say what each stone is: ‘Lab-Grown Diamond’, ‘Lab-Created Ruby’, ‘Simulated’ birthstones, and natural garnet all appear in names and details11,18,19,30; one bracelet names a ‘Simulated Blue Opal’ while its details list the stone class as ‘Created’31. Gold is described by karat, such as 14K, without the alloy9, and gold-plated silver pieces don’t give the plating thickness30.

Its product pages say every Zales natural diamond is responsibly sourced, and the footer links to Signet’s conflict-free sourcing policy32, which follows the Kimberley Process33. Stores match a lower price on zales.com for identical items34.

Payment & financing

Zales accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, PayPal and Apple Pay6. It runs its own checkout, and we found no card processor named6,13,23,25.

You can pay over time with Affirm, at 0–36% APR, and checking your eligibility doesn’t affect your credit3,23. There is also the Zales Credit Card, issued by Comenity Capital Bank23, and lease-to-own through Progressive Leasing, which costs more than paying cash23.

What customers say

Zales names no flagship store, so we score the Google tier that every store rating we found reaches: its Fifth Avenue store in New York is rated 4.7 from 714 reviews, and its Chicago Ridge Mall store 4.4 from 30915,16. Review sites that cover the whole chain are harsher: Trustpilot shows 2 out of 5 from 208 reviews17, and Yelp averages 2.6 across 3,362 reviews of its stores22. Several Zales stores have BBB profiles rated A+ and accredited since mid-202535. We’re still checking Trustpilot and the BBB by hand.

Complaints we found are mostly about what happens after the sale. In a Facebook group, a buyer says Zales didn’t stand behind the protection plan paid for on a damaged ring36; on Reddit, one shopper says a store told them a ring bought on zales.com was fake37; and a review on ReviewStream says the prongs of a ring had worn down and needed replacing38. Another Reddit buyer says a diamond chipped within weeks and, after a side stone fell out, Zales replaced the whole ring39.

Zales FAQ

Is Zales legit?

Yes. It’s a jewelry chain founded in 1924 with more than 400 stores, owned by Signet Jewelers1,12, and its returns are straightforward: 30 days, with a free label for online orders2. Our score is held back by its warranty, which covers only diamonds and lapses without inspections every six months1,2,4,5,6,7, by unnamed grading labs4,6,7,9,10,11, and by poor ratings on Trustpilot and Yelp17,22.

Who owns Zales?

Signet Jewelers, since 201412. Signet is a publicly traded company whose brands also include Kay, Jared, Blue Nile and Peoples24, and zales.com’s terms of use are an agreement with Signet Jewelers13.

What is Zales' return policy?

30 days from the purchase (shipment) date to return, 60 days to exchange — exchanges only in a store2. Online orders get a free return label and can also be returned to any store; the refund goes back to your payment method minus delivery charges2,9. Custom, engraved and altered pieces can’t be returned2.

What does the Zales warranty cover?

The free Lifetime Diamond Commitment replaces a diamond that chips, breaks or falls out in normal wear, on diamond purchases of $200 or more4, as long as you bring the piece in every six months for inspection4. It doesn’t cover colored gemstones, watches, previously owned pieces, theft or loss4; repairs to the metal need a Lifetime Protection Plan, bought separately5,8.

Does Zales clean jewelry for free and resize rings?

Cleaning and inspection are free at any Zales store6. Resizing and repairs are done in stores after an estimate, so they’re paid7; a ring ordered online in a size other than the standard one takes up to three more business days20.

Does Zales do payment plans?

Yes: Affirm at 0–36% APR3,23, the Zales Credit Card issued by Comenity Capital Bank23, and lease-to-own with Progressive Leasing, which costs more than the cash price23.

Are Zales diamonds real and certified?

Product pages say whether a stone is natural, lab-grown, lab-created or simulated, and give the gold karat9,11,18. ‘Certified’ diamonds come with a certificate, but the pages we read don’t name the grading lab4,6,7,9,10,11.

Does Zales buy back jewelry?

It has a gold exchange that buys gold jewelry and returns your items free if you turn down the offer6. Zales diamonds can also be traded in at 100% of what you paid, toward a new piece that costs at least twice as much4.

Does Zales ship outside the US?

Only to the US and US territories6. Expedited shipping is the default, and shipping to a store for pickup is free6,14.
