Our verdict
Canada’s largest fine-jewellery chain, owned by Signet, the group behind Kay, Zales and Jared — 30 days to return with a free label, free cleaning in 90+ stores and a lifetime guarantee on lost diamonds, but no general warranty against defects, paid resizing and repairs, and 'certified' diamonds whose grading lab isn't named.

Scored for Canada. Peoples’ website is meant only for people located in Canada4, so this Trust Score rates an online order delivered within Canada rather than to the US. Prices are in Canadian dollars25, and services at its Canadian stores, such as free cleaning, count1,3.
The bottom line. Peoples Jewellers was founded in 19191, says it has over 90 stores across Canada1, and has belonged to Signet Jewelers since 20141; its Canadian company, Zale Canada Co., is named on the site8. Online returns get 30 days and a free pre-printed label, with the refund going back to your card minus delivery charges2, and shipping is free on orders of $99 or more5. Its stores clean and inspect jewellery for free3, and a Lifetime Diamond Commitment replaces a diamond lost in normal wear on diamond purchases of $200 or more5,6. It scores in the ‘caution’ range because that commitment is the only free warranty we found1,2,3,5,6,7: it covers diamonds only and lapses unless you bring the piece in every six months6; repairs to the metal are covered only by a protection plan you buy separately7,9, and resizing is paid10. Its ‘certified’ diamonds don’t name a grading lab on the pages we read11,12,13,14,15,16, shipping insurance isn’t mentioned2,4,5,17, and the only financing is its own credit card at 31.99%–39.99% interest3. Its stores rate well on Google18, but online reviews include rings damaged or losing stones and disputes over repairs19,20.

Who is behind Peoples Jewellers
Peoples Jewellers was founded in 1919 as a family business and says it was the first company in Canada to sell jewellery on a time payment plan1. It calls itself the largest fine-jewellery retailer in Canada, with over 90 stores from the Maritimes to British Columbia1, and is a member of the Canadian Jewellers Association1. The peoplesjewellers.com domain dates from April 199926.
Peoples joined Signet Jewelers in 20141. Signet is a publicly traded company whose brands include Kay, Zales, Jared, Blue Nile and Peoples27; the site’s terms say ‘Signet Jewelers operates in Canada as Peoples Jewellers’ and that Signet is based in Ohio4, and its Ontario accessibility policy names the Canadian company, Zale Canada Co.8. The site names no executives; Signet’s site and the press name Julie Yoakum as President of Kay Jewelers and Peoples Jewellers28.
The terms say the website is meant only for people located in Canada4. The same terms page also carries Signet’s US Terms of Use, effective October 2024, written for US residents and with a binding arbitration clause4. Online returns go to 231 Bentley Street in Markham, Ontario; the help center gives 61 McPherson St, also in Markham2,3.

Returns & exchanges
Jewellery can be returned within 30 days of the purchase (shipment) date and exchanged within 60 days; watches get 30 days2. The Peoples Promise puts it as 30 days ‘for a FULL refund. No questions asked’5. Purchases made between October 20 and December 24, 2026 can be returned until January 24, 20272. Returns of online orders can be made by mail or at a store, but exchanges have to be done in a store2,11.
For online orders Peoples offers a free pre-printed return label2. Pieces must come back in their original condition with all packaging and paperwork — ‘good condition’ with all original certificates, as product pages put it2,11 — and each return is inspected before the refund is issued2. The refund goes back to your original payment method minus delivery charges, and takes about five business days to process2; we found no restocking fee2,3,5,11.
Custom designs, engraved or altered jewellery, special-order watches, gift cards and protection-plan replacements can’t be returned2; the help center’s list also includes ear-piercing earrings3.

Shipping & delivery
Shipping is free on orders of $99 or more5, and any online order can be sent free to a store for pickup17. Parcels go by UPS, with a UPS Access Point as an option11; orders are processed on business days, excluding Canadian holidays17, and rings ordered in a size other than the standard one take up to 6 more business days17.
Orders of $1,000 or more need a signature on delivery17. We found no mention of shipping insurance2,4,5,17. If a parcel shows as delivered but you can’t find it, Peoples says it will investigate once you fill in an online form17 — but not for packages shipped more than 60 days earlier3.

Warranty & aftercare
Peoples’ free warranty is its Lifetime Diamond Commitment, which applies to diamond purchases of $200 or more6: in the words of the Peoples Promise, ‘Lose your diamond? We’ll replace it at no extra charge’5. It doesn’t cover previously owned diamond jewellery, coloured gemstones, watches, theft or loss6, and repairs needed to secure a diamond in its setting are paid or go through the optional protection plan6. We found no general warranty against manufacturing defects1,2,3,5,6,7.
For the metal, Peoples sells an optional Lifetime Protection Plan as a one-time purchase, covering cleaning, prong tightening and re-tipping and rhodium finishing — ‘any necessary repairs under normal conditions’, but not diamonds or gemstones5,7,9. Repairs can be started online or in a store, and stores give an estimate first3,6. Resizing is paid, and the price depends on the ring10.
Any Peoples store cleans and inspects jewellery free, as often as you like3,6. Stores also do appraisals3. You can put the original price of a Peoples diamond ring toward an upgrade at any time5, and Peoples bridal sets and solitaires count toward a new diamond purchase with the receipt5.
The diamond commitment lapses unless you bring the piece to Peoples every six months for cleaning and inspection, along with your inspection record6. Miss one, and a lost diamond may no longer be replaced. A shopper on Reddit says that each time they went in, staff couldn’t find the warranty19, so keep your own copy of each inspection receipt.

What Peoples sells & what it costs
Peoples sells engagement rings, wedding bands, fine jewellery and watches, including designer lines such as Vera Wang, Emmy London and Neil Lane1; its sitemap lists about 20,000 product pages25. Part of the range is previously owned jewellery, sold ‘lovingly restored’30. In the 15 product pages our sampler read, prices ran from C$49.50 to C$3,359.30, with engagement rings from C$1,099.5025.
Diamonds sold as ‘certified’ come with a certificate that includes a photo and description of the diamond11, or ‘a certification card’12; lab-grown diamonds come with an ‘independent laboratory report’ and, once mounted, an insurance appraisal14. None of the pages we read names the grading lab11,12,13,14,15,16. Each Canadian diamond carries a laser-inscribed certification number that identifies its mine15, and lab-grown diamonds of 1/5 carat and up are inscribed ‘lab grown diamond’14. Product pages give total carat weights as approximate31.
Stones are labeled plainly: ‘Lab-Grown Diamond’, ‘Lab-Created Opal’, ‘Simulated … Sapphire’ and cubic zirconia all appear in product names and details13,21,22,32. Gold is described by karat, such as 14K, without the alloy12; plated pieces name the plating (‘Sterling silver with 14K yellow gold plate’) but not its thickness31, and rhodium finishes come with a note that they may wear off11. A previously owned platinum band lists its purity as 92533.
Peoples says it sells only conflict-free diamonds34 under Signet’s Responsible Sourcing Protocol1. In a CBC Marketplace hidden-camera investigation, Peoples and Michael Hill stores couldn’t say which country most of their diamonds were mined in35. Its stores match a lower price on PeoplesJewellers.com for identical items36.

What customers say
Peoples names no flagship store, so we score the Google tier that every store rating we found reaches: its store at 3401 Dufferin St in Toronto is rated 4.6 from 969 reviews, and its St. Laurent store in Ottawa 4.8 from 97218,23. Trustpilot shows only about 42 reviews for peoplesjewellers.com, and its summary says most reviewers were unhappy38. The BBB has separate profiles for individual Peoples stores; some are accredited since June 2025 and one is rated A+39. We’re still checking Trustpilot and the BBB by hand.
Complaints we found are about what happens after the sale. On Reddit, a shopper says a ring was bent and damaged, the store refused to fix it properly, and staff couldn’t find the warranty19. On Yelp, one buyer says stones fell out of a gold ring worn about four times20, and a customer since 2008 says the chain has ‘gone downhill’ after paying for a warranty on a wedding ring24.

Peoples FAQ
Is Peoples Jewellers legit?
Yes. It’s a Canadian chain founded in 1919 with over 90 stores, owned by Signet Jewelers1, and its returns are straightforward: 30 days, with a free label for online orders2. Our score is held back by its warranty, which covers only lost diamonds and lapses without inspections every six months1,2,3,5,6,7, and by complaints about repairs19.
Who owns Peoples Jewellers? Is it a Canadian company?
Peoples was founded in Canada in 1919 and has been part of Signet Jewelers since 20141. Signet, the publicly traded group behind Kay, Zales and Jared, is based in Ohio and ‘operates in Canada as Peoples Jewellers’; the site also names its Canadian company, Zale Canada Co.4,8,27.
What is Peoples Jewellers' return policy?
30 days from the purchase (shipment) date to return, 60 days to exchange — exchanges only in a store2. Online orders get a free return label, and the refund goes back to your payment method minus delivery charges2. Custom, engraved and altered pieces can’t be returned2.
Does Peoples Jewellers have a lifetime warranty?
Only for diamonds: the free Lifetime Diamond Commitment replaces a diamond lost in normal wear on diamond purchases of $200 or more5,6, as long as you bring the piece in for inspection every six months6. Repairs to the metal are covered only by a Lifetime Protection Plan, bought separately9.
Does Peoples Jewellers resize rings and do repairs?
Yes, both for a fee: the price of resizing depends on the ring, and stores give an estimate for repairs6,10. Repairs can also be started online3. Cleaning and inspection are free at any store3.
Does Peoples Jewellers offer payment plans?
Only through its own Peoples Jewellers Credit Card, provided by Flexiti Financial, with interest of 31.99%–39.99%3. We found no pay-later service such as Affirm or Klarna2,3,5.
Does Peoples Jewellers ship to the US?
We found no sign that it does: its terms say the website is meant only for people located in Canada4, and orders are processed on business days excluding Canadian holidays17. That’s why this review is scored for an order within Canada.
Are Peoples Jewellers diamonds real and certified?
Product pages say what each stone is — natural, lab-grown, lab-created or simulated — and give the gold karat12,13,21. ‘Certified’ diamonds come with a certificate or an ‘independent laboratory report’, but the pages we read don’t name the lab11,12,13,14,15,16. Canadian diamonds carry a laser-inscribed number identifying their mine15.
Does Peoples Jewellers do appraisals or buy back rings?
Its stores do appraisals3. We didn’t find an offer to buy jewellery for cash, but Peoples diamond bridal sets and solitaires, with the receipt, count toward a new diamond purchase, and the original price of a Peoples diamond ring can go toward an upgrade5.
Is Peoples Jewellers shipping free?
Free on orders of $99 or more, and free to a store for pickup5,17. Rings ordered in a size other than the standard one take up to 6 more business days17, and orders of $1,000 or more need a signature17.
