Our verdict
A real Brooklyn jeweler with its own studio and 12 stores, solid recycled gold and GIA-graded engagement diamonds — but returns are short and cost $9, shipping isn't free or insured, and online reviewers complain about customer service.

Who is behind Catbird
Catbird started in 2004 as a tiny shop in Williamsburg, Brooklyn7; its domain dates from the same year18. Founder Rony Vardi and creative director Leigh Plessner run it7, and the head office and studio, with more than 40 jewelers, are in the Brooklyn Navy Yard7,8. It now has 12 stores, from SoHo and Rockefeller Center to Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago and Seattle2, and The New York Times has covered its growth19.
What the site doesn’t give is the legal name of the company you buy from8,11,12. The Terms are governed by New York law11. Catbird says it gives at least 1% of sales to non-profits9.

What Catbird sells & what it costs
Catbird’s jewelry is mostly solid 14k or 10k gold, never plated1, and its own line is made in New York1; it says it uses over 95% recycled gold9. All brilliant-cut diamonds in its line are recycled, rose cuts are conflict-free, the Swan engagement rings also come with lab-grown diamonds, and all diamonds follow the Kimberley Process3.
The Anna the Swan engagement ring we checked has a 0.5-carat recycled center diamond graded E–J and VS1–SI2, comes with a GIA report and was on sale from $3,600 instead of $4,5004, plus a Catbird certificate of authenticity4. Everyday pieces cost far less: $180–$471 for the rings and silver pendant we sampled20. Catbird also sells other designers, such as a Laurie Fleming pink sapphire ring at $3,35821. It doesn’t do custom work or set customers’ stones1, and no appraisal is mentioned1,4,6.
