Is Rogers & Hollands legit? Our verdict

A family-owned jewelry chain dating to 1910, run by Rogers Enterprises, Inc. — 60 days to return, free insured shipping with a signature on orders of $99 or more, PayPal, Klarna and its own credit account, and a free diamond guarantee, but mail returns go back at your cost and risk, the guarantee covers diamonds only and needs an inspection every six months, and its diamonds come without a named grading lab.

Best for

  • Shoppers near one of its stores, where returns, exchanges and the free diamond inspections are easiest1,2,3

Not ideal for

  • Online buyers far from a store who want free return shipping1,4,5,6
  • Buyers who want an independent lab report with a center stone7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14

The bottom line. Rogers & Hollands traces its history to Hollands Jewelers, open since 1910, and to Rogers Jewelers, founded in 1945 in Harvey, Illinois15; it says it is family-owned and run by Rogers Enterprises Inc., with stores in 13 states15, and its privacy policy names Rogers Enterprises, Inc., a Delaware corporation, as the operator of the site16. Pieces in new condition can be returned for a full refund within 60 days or exchanged within 1001, shipping is free on orders of $99 or more and every package is fully insured and signed for6, and you can pay with cards, PayPal, Klarna or its own credit account5. Its free We Will guarantee cleans and inspects diamond jewelry and covers diamonds against loss from the mounting and chipping for as long as you own the piece2. It lands just above the ‘caution’ range because mail returns are shipped and insured by you, at your risk1,4,5,6, that guarantee covers diamonds only and lapses if you miss a six-month inspection2, sizing and repairs are paid unless you buy a protection plan17, and the diamond pages we read name no grading lab or report7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14. Its stores are rated 4.6 on Google18,19,20.

Returns & exchanges

Pieces in new condition can be returned for a full refund within 60 days or exchanged within 100 days with a valid receipt; online purchases can be returned by mail or in any store, but exchanged only in a store1. The FAQ and the summary on its other pages give the same 60 and 100 days4,6. Worn pieces, customized jewelry, special-order watches, pre-owned Rolexes and engraved items can’t be returned1. Refunds go back in the same form as the payment, and online returns are processed within 1–2 business days of arriving1,5.

Some fees apply: services such as sizing, soldering and shipping aren’t refunded, a piece that was altered (sized, soldered or with a customized stone) carries a 10% restocking fee of up to $75, and a missing diamond certification card or lab report costs $501. To return by mail, you send the piece by USPS to Matteson, insured for its full price; the company takes no responsibility for loss or damage on the way, and the original shipping isn’t refunded unless the item was damaged, defective or wrong1. We found no prepaid return label1,4,5,6.

Diamond jewelry bought from Rogers & Hollands can be traded in at its original price toward a new purchase that costs at least double; pieces from other jewelers are evaluated and can count for up to 25% of a new purchase32. The company doesn’t buy jewelry back5.

Mail returns are on you
If you send an online order back by mail, you ship it yourself, insured for its full price, and Rogers & Hollands takes no responsibility if it’s lost or damaged on the way1,4,5,6. Online purchases can also be returned at any of its stores1.

Warranty & aftercare

The free warranty is the We Will Diamond Guarantee: for as long as you own the piece, Rogers & Hollands cleans and inspects your diamond jewelry at no charge and guarantees its diamonds against loss from the mounting and against chipping2. It applies only to jewelry whose stones are all diamonds or that has a diamond center, only in karat gold, platinum or palladium, and only to single diamonds up to 2.05 carats; it doesn’t cover metal work or labor, and if you miss a six-month inspection your diamonds aren’t covered until the piece is re-inspected and any repairs are done and paid for2. Theft isn’t covered2, and sizing and repairs under the guarantee are paid17. If you don’t live near a store, inspections can be done by mail, with shipping in at your expense and risk5.

We found no other warranty against manufacturing defects1,2,4,5,15,17,24. For the rest of the piece, it sells 3-year and lifetime protection plans that need no inspections and cover stone loss and chips, repairs from normal wear and, with the lifetime plan, ring sizing17; on a $2,999 ring they cost $125.99 and $359.99, and they can’t be bought for orders shipped to Florida or California7. The plans are administered by Guardsman US LLC33, and neither plans nor the guarantee cover loss or theft of the piece itself5.

Repairs start with an inspection and an estimate and carry a 90-day workmanship guarantee on the area serviced5. Ordering a ring in a size that isn’t in stock costs extra, $39.99 on the ring we checked7, and appraisals cost $225 per item through an independent appraiser5.

Keep the six-month inspections
The We Will guarantee protects your diamonds only while you keep up an inspection every six months; miss one, and the diamonds aren’t covered until the piece is re-inspected and any repairs are paid for2. You need the receipt of your most recent inspection to use the guarantee2, so keep each one.

What Rogers & Hollands sells & what it costs

In the product pages we opened, prices ran from $78.00 for a gold-plated silver bracelet to $7,999.00 for a 3 1/2ctw diamond engagement ring9,35.

Natural diamonds are labeled ‘Diamond (Natural)’8, but the diamond pages we read give only the store’s own color and clarity grades and mention no grading lab or report7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14. A 1/3ct solitaire at $699.99 is graded HI color and I1-2 clarity8; the four princess-cut centers of the $7,999.00 ring total 1.60ct at HI and I29; and a 2 1/2ct lab-grown solitaire at $2,800.00 is described as F color and VS clarity11. The returns policy charges $50 for ‘missing diamond certification cards or lab reports’ without naming a lab1,4,5. One engagement ring is simply called ‘Gia’, a style name10.

Lab-grown diamonds carry ‘Lab Grown’ in their names and ‘Diamond (Lab Grown)’ as the stone type12, cubic zirconia is called ‘CZ’ and ‘cubic zirconia’23, and moissanite ‘Created Moissanite’22. Black diamonds are listed as ‘Diamond (Black)’14, and the terms say gemstones and colored diamonds may have been treated, for example by heating, irradiation or fracture filling26.

Gold is given by karat in product names, such as 14k, with ‘Gold’ as the metal type and no alloy36; gold-plated silver and 18k gold vermeil pieces don’t give the plating thickness13,35. The terms explain how much a fractional carat weight can vary, for example .45 to .55 carats for 1/2 carat26.

We found no sourcing policy, such as Kimberley Process compliance or recycled metals, on its pages3,4,5,15,25,26,27, and no appraisal included with purchases; an appraisal costs $225 per item5.

What customers say

Rogers & Hollands names neither a flagship nor a head-office store5,15,27,31, so we score the Google tier that every store rating we found reaches: its stores at Orland Square in Orland Park, in Schaumburg and in Wauwatosa are each rated 4.6, from 258, 689 and 587 reviews18,19,20. Yelp averages 3.6 across 1,069 reviews of its stores38. A BBB directory lists the company as accredited with an A+ rating39, while its BBB customer reviews average 1 out of 5 from 1240. We’re still checking Trustpilot and the BBB by hand.

The complaints we found are mostly about service and workmanship. PriceScope says customer service is ‘consistently subpar’ and that some of its diamonds ‘have questionable certificates’41; on Birdeye, a buyer at its Bloomington, Indiana store says the manager got a ring size wrong and called back to raise the price after the order42; and on Weddingbee, a buyer regrets their ring because ‘the craftsmanship is horrible’43. On the other side, a Reddit user who bought a ring there 11 years ago says an upgrade credits what you paid for your first ring44.
