REEDS Jewelers was founded in 1946 by Bill and Roberta Zimmer with one store in Wilmington, North Carolina, and is still a family-run business with stores in thirteen states¹; reeds.com is owned and operated by REEDS Jewelers, Inc.¹², and its about page names Alan Zimmer as President and CEO¹. Jewelry bought online can be returned within 30 days of delivery with a pre-paid label, or at any REEDS store², and you can pay over time with Affirm, Afterpay or the store’s own credit card^3,4,13. Its stores clean jewelry for free⁶, and its Google ratings are strong: the Mayfaire store in Wilmington has 4.8 from 1,315 reviews^14,15. It scores in the ‘caution’ range because the returns policy credits refunds ‘minus applicable processing fees’ without saying what they are, while other pages promise free returns and a full refund^2,7,8,12; because we found no free warranty with written terms, as repairs, resizing and missing-stone cover come with paid care plans^{1,2,5,6,7,8,9,10,11}; and because its shipping terms don’t mention insurance or lost packages^2,7,8,12,16. Some solitaires come with a GSI or IGI report, but a 2ct diamond solitaire we checked is graded only by the store^9,10,11,17.

Who is behind REEDS

REEDS says Bill and Roberta Zimmer founded it in 1946 with one store in Wilmington, North Carolina; it now has stores in thirteen states and is still family-run¹. Bill Zimmer’s son Alan became President and CEO in 1985, according to the about page¹, and Rapaport also calls him the CEO of Reeds Jewelers²⁹. The site’s terms say REEDS Jewelers, Inc. owns and operates reeds.com from its offices in New Hanover County, North Carolina¹², and give 111 Princess St. in Wilmington as the address of its copyright agent¹².

Other jewelers use the REEDS name: reedsjewelers.com, for one, calls itself ‘the original Reeds Jewelers’³⁰. REEDS Jewelers, Inc. says it isn’t associated with any other jewelry chain using the name, and that purchases from reeds.com can’t be returned at stores run by another company². The reeds.com domain dates from April 1999³¹. Its ‘Landmark’ stores, Mayfair Town Center, Corpus Christi South Staples and Landmark at Fenton, are described as premier destinations¹, and REEDS is an authorized Rolex retailer¹.

How to reach REEDS

Customer service answers calls and texts at 844-733-3740, and also offers live chat, email at [email protected] and a contact form^18,33. It’s open Monday to Friday 9 am–8 pm, Saturday 10 am–5 pm and Sunday 11 am–5 pm Eastern time¹⁸. Letters go to a PO box in Wilmington, NC¹⁸. To cancel or change an order, call while it is still unprocessed; once it has shipped it can’t be canceled, only returned².

Returns & exchanges

Jewelry bought on reeds.com can be returned or exchanged within 30 days of delivery, watches within 10 days, as long as the piece is new and unused and you have the receipt or packing list²; returns are open to US customers for products shipped within the US². You start a return online and print a pre-paid shipping label, or bring the piece to any REEDS store, except items marked ‘Return by mail only’². Refunds usually go through within 3–5 business days of the return arriving².

The policy credits returns to the original payment ‘minus applicable processing fees’ without saying what those fees are, and ring sizing fees are kept^2,7,8,12. Other pages sound more generous: the shipping page promises ‘free 30-day returns’⁸, the home page ‘easy, free returns’²⁸, and the customer-experience page a ‘full refund’⁷. Some personalized and engraved items can’t be returned², and several diamond solitaires we opened are listed as ‘Final Sale’^10,11,17, a label the returns policy doesn’t mention^2,7,8,12.

Diamond jewelry can be traded in toward a new diamond purchase that costs at least double, with the original diamond warranty or sales receipt; lab-grown pieces can be traded only toward lab-grown ones².

Shipping & delivery

Standard shipping costs $10 and is free on orders of $100 or more, arriving within 2–7 business days of shipping; 2-day express is $15 or free over $500, and overnight $25 or free over $1,000⁸. In-stock orders placed before noon Eastern time on weekdays ship the same day⁸, and orders placed by noon can be picked up the same day in a store⁸.

Shipments over $1,000 need a signature⁸. We found no mention of shipping insurance or of what happens if a package is lost or stolen^2,7,8,12,16. Orders to other countries go through Zonos, a third-party company⁸.

Warranty & aftercare

We found no free warranty against manufacturing defects with written terms on reeds.com^{1,2,5,6,7,8,9,10}. A lab-grown diamond page promises ‘the exact same product and trade in warranties’ as REEDS’ mined diamonds, but the pages we read don’t say what those warranties cover^{1,2,5,6,7,8,9,10}.

What REEDS sells instead are care plans, a 3-year or a lifetime plan chosen with the piece: $84.99 or $169.99 on a $947.50 ring, and $299.99 or $439.99 on the 2ct solitaire^10,11. The care-plan page promises ‘all-encompassing’ lifetime coverage that ‘even means missing stones’, no required inspections, and unlimited ring resizing with the lifetime plan⁵, with ‘certain exclusions and limitations’⁵. The plans are provided by Federal Warranty Service Corporation, or by United Service Protection in Florida and Assurant Service Protection in Oklahoma⁵.

REEDS stores offer free cleanings every day⁶. Repairs come in paid packages, from $135 for cleaning, polishing and tightening stones to $235 with re-tipping of up to 3 prongs and one ring sizing⁶; ordering a ring in a non-standard size adds up to 3 business days⁸, and the sizing fee isn’t refunded if you return it². REEDS also buys gold, silver and platinum, by mail-in kit or in its stores, paying for the metal content only³⁴.

What REEDS sells & what it costs

REEDS sells diamond, gemstone, pearl, gold, silver, titanium and platinum jewelry¹, with brands such as Pandora, MIKIMOTO, Swarovski and TOUS online¹, and its ring builder lists more than 87,000 loose diamonds². In the product pages we opened, prices ran from $79.99 for a created-emerald silver ring to $8,397 for a 2ct diamond solitaire^10,19.

REEDS says the only labs it uses are GIA, GSI, IGI, AGS and the Forevermark Diamond Institute, and that it offers grading reports on ‘several products’²⁶. In practice it varies. A 1 1/2ct diamond solitaire at $6,097.50 comes with a GSI report¹⁷, a 1 1/2ct lab-grown solitaire at $2,499.99 also with a GSI report²⁵, and 2ctw lab-grown studs at $4,999.99 with an IGI report⁹. But a 2ct diamond solitaire at $8,397 and a 1/2ct solitaire at $947.50 are described only by the store’s own color and clarity ranges, ‘J or better’ and ‘I2 or better’, with no report mentioned^10,11.

Product pages name the stone: ‘Lab Grown Diamond’, ‘Cubic Zirconia’ (described as ‘a man-made jewel’) and ‘created emerald’^9,19,20, and ECONIC lab-grown solitaires are laser-inscribed to confirm they’re lab-grown⁹. Gold is described by karat, such as 18k, without the alloy³⁵; gold-filled pieces are labeled ‘Gold Filled – 14k’³⁶, silver ‘Sterling Silver – 925’³⁷, and gold-plated silver doesn’t give the plating thickness³⁸. Accent diamonds come with total carat weight and color and clarity ranges³⁹.

REEDS says it requires Kimberley Process compliance from its diamond vendors and rejects diamond shipments without the proper warranty⁴⁰, and that it hasn’t accepted diamonds or other products of Russian origin since February 25, 2022⁴¹. We found no appraisal offered with purchases on the pages we read^{2,6,9,10,11,17,25,26}.

Payment & financing

The terms mention payment by credit and debit cards¹², and the home page says REEDS accepts bitcoin²⁸; we found no mention of PayPal^{2,3,7,8,12,23,24}. The checkout is REEDS’ own, built on Magento, and no card processor is named^{3,12,23,27,28}; the site uses GeoTrust for its security²³.

You can pay over time with Affirm at 0–36% APR over 3, 6 or 12 months³, or with Afterpay, in 4 interest-free payments for $35–$2,000 or monthly installments for $400–$5,000⁴; another REEDS page gives Afterpay’s range as $2,000 to $5,000³. The REEDS Jewelers Credit Card, issued by Synchrony Bank, offers no interest if paid in full within 6 or 12 months and a 13.99% APR plan over 60 months^13,27, and Progressive Leasing offers lease-to-own, which costs more than the cash price³. We found no layaway^{2,3,4,7,12,13,43}.

What customers say

REEDS doesn’t name a flagship store on its site^1,2,7,18,28, but local press calls its Mayfaire store in Wilmington the flagship³²; that store, at 926 Inspiration Drive, has 4.8 on Google from 1,315 reviews^14,15. Its Northlake Mall store in Charlotte has 4.8 from 252 reviews and a Corpus Christi store 4.9 from 759^21,22. On Trustpilot, REEDS shows a 4-star rating⁴⁴, and Trustpilot’s AI summary of 2,198 reviews says reviewers ‘overwhelmingly had a great experience’⁴⁵. We’re still checking the exact TrustScore and the BBB profile by hand.

The complaints we found are mostly about delivery and service. Trustpilot’s summary says some reviewers mention delivery delays and damaged items⁴⁶; a ResellerRatings review says customer service is ‘extremely slow at replying’⁴⁷, and another says their ring ‘has been back two times already’ in 3 months and is thankful for the protection plan they bought⁴⁷. A RolexForums thread about the North Carolina chain is titled ‘Reeds Jewelers SCAM’⁴⁸, and the BBB complaints page for Reed’s Jewelers in Wilmington, NC lists 19 complaints in the last 3 years, 7 of them in the last 12 months⁴⁹. On Reddit, one buyer praises REEDS for custom rings with ‘no custom fees, lifetime warranty, and quality material’⁵⁰; on the site itself, lifetime cover is sold as a paid care plan^5,11.
