Most designs are .925 sterling silver, with 14k gold, vermeil and plated pieces too², and its Happiness Guarantee covers manufacturing defects for the lifetime of the piece⁴. You can pay by card or PayPal — though its terms say PayPal only by email — and in installments with Klarna or Afterpay^2,5,10. The score is pulled down by its returns: a replacement or merchandise credit within 28 days of receipt, with no money back^1,2,4,5,6, and you choose and pay for the return shipping⁴. We found no free shipping, insurance, signature or lost-parcel procedure on its pages^{2,4,5,6,7,11,12}, no free cleaning or resizing^2,3,4,5,13, no carat weight or quality for its diamonds on the pages we could read^{2,6,8,10,11,12,14,15,16}, and no Trustpilot profile¹⁷.

Who is behind Dune Jewelry

Dune Jewelry was founded in 2010 by Holly Daniels Christensen, who signs its About page as Founder & Designer and says the idea took shape at her kitchen table in 2007^1,6; a post on Dune’s blog calls her Founder & CEO²², and KSBW calls her its owner²³. Its terms name the company as Dune Jewelry Inc., and its trademarks as the property of Dune Jewelry and Quinn Daniels Inc.⁵. Wikipedia describes Dune Jewelry Inc. as a private Massachusetts jewelry maker²⁴ and says Inc. magazine put it on its 2018 list of fastest-growing companies²⁴. The dunejewelry.com domain dates from August 2010¹⁸.

Pieces are handcrafted by its own team in its studio at 935 Washington St in Norwood, Massachusetts^1,7; its terms say they’re made by hand, to order, ‘in Boston, MA’⁵. The studio itself is closed to the public, but The Cove, Dune’s boutique in front of it, and the Dune Boutique at 566 Route 28 in Harwich Port sell its jewelry²; National Jeweler reported the Harwich Port shop as Dune’s first branded store²⁵. Dune also sells through ‘hundreds of retailers’ in the US and abroad².

How to reach Dune Jewelry

Dune’s customer service answers the phone at 617-364-1065 from 10 am to 5 pm Eastern, Monday to Friday⁷, email at [email protected]⁴, and a support portal, with replies promised within 24 hours⁷; its pages also load a chat widget⁶. To change an order, contact Dune at once: changes asked for after 2 business days may not be possible².

Returns & exchanges

Dune doesn’t give money back^1,2,4,5,6. If a piece doesn’t meet your expectations, it will replace it or issue a merchandise credit within 28 days of receipt⁴; the FAQ limits this to unworn jewelry sent back in its original packaging², and the terms explain that Dune offers merchandise credit ‘due to the custom nature of each order’⁵.

For a return you print and fill in a return authorization form⁴ and mail the piece to Dune Jewelry, Attn: Returns & Exchanges, at its Norwood address⁴; the shipping method and its cost are up to you⁴. Online orders have to be returned to Dune, not to one of its retailers⁴. The terms add that its Happiness Guarantee will ‘address and fix’ quality issues or dissatisfaction⁵.

Shipping & delivery

Dune’s FAQ says each piece is handmade to order and ships within 10 business days of the order². Rush production costs $30 — one answer says the order then ships within 5 business days, another ‘in 4 business days instead of the standard 7’² — and the terms say domestic orders generally ship by USPS within 1–2 weeks⁵. Back-ordered pieces typically take 6–8 weeks, and diamond designs 8–10 weeks¹⁴.

Standard shipping is by USPS, with UPS as an option, and expedited shipping costs are calculated at checkout². Dune ships abroad, where customs fees may be charged². We found no free-shipping offer, no mention of insurance or a signature, and no procedure for a parcel that is lost or arrives damaged^{2,4,5,6,7,11,12}.

Warranty & care

Dune’s Happiness Guarantee covers all manufacturing defects for the lifetime of the piece, and if a piece has problems on arrival, Dune repairs or replaces it at no extra cost⁴. It doesn’t cover apparel, non-jewelry accessories or free gifts, and shipping fees may apply⁴; for other damage, Dune says it will ‘do our best to help you restore’ the piece⁴. Google’s snippet of its registration page says the lifetime guarantee is unlocked by registering your design²¹. Repairs go through Dune’s own studio, though its retailers can help you send them⁴.

We found no free cleaning, polishing or resizing^2,3,4,5,13. The care page suggests polishing scratched silver yourself and rubbing the resin with boat wax, and contacting the studio under the warranty if that doesn’t work¹³; Dune recommends its own foaming jewelry cleaner² and advises taking your jewelry off whenever you’ll get wet^2,13. Rings come in whole sizes, and Dune can mail you a ring sizer³; if a ring has to be resized, the sizing page talks about taking it to a jeweler³.

What Dune Jewelry sells & what it costs

Dune sets sand and other elements — from a Sandbank of more than 5,500 places, or your own — into its designs¹, using resin². Its FAQ says most designs are .925 sterling silver, with others in 14k gold, 14k gold vermeil, stainless steel and silver plate, all nickel- and lead-free². Product pages name the metal — ‘.925 sterling silver’, ‘Cast in 14k yellow gold’ — but not the gold alloy^12,15. Its Dune Silver and Dune Gold lines, sold under a ‘.999 Silver & 14k Gold Plated Jewelry’ heading, are fine silver or 14k gold plated over brass¹⁶, and no plating thickness is given^2,13,16.

In the pieces we checked, stones are named: the airplane studs list cubic zirconia¹⁰, and Dune describes its Ocean Gradient as made with turquoise and mother of pearl²⁶. It also sells diamond designs: its home page features Diamond and Diamond & Turquoise Gradients⁶, Google’s snippets of its pages describe ‘ethically sourced natural diamonds’ set in sterling silver^27,28, and a Dune Facebook post calls the Diamond Gradient stones ‘melee diamonds’²⁹. Its diamond product pages weren’t among the pages we could save, and nothing we read gives the carat weight or quality of these diamonds^{2,6,8,10,11,12,14,15,16}.

Apart from saying its sand and elements are ‘collected ethically’ by customers², Dune publishes no sourcing policy for its metals or diamonds that we could find^{1,2,5,6,16,30}. It says a portion of every order goes to coastal and global causes, more than $250,000 over the years³⁰. The pieces we checked ran from $125 for sterling silver studs and $245 for a silver ring to $3,975 for a 14k gold cuff^8,10,12.

Payment

The store runs on Magento, and card payments go through Braintree, according to its page code⁶. The FAQ lists Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express and PayPal, and Klarna for 4 payments²; the terms instead list Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Afterpay online, and say PayPal or a personal check have to be arranged by email⁵. Product pages offer Afterpay in 4 payments every 2 weeks¹⁰. Dune says it uses SSL to protect card details⁵.

What customers say

Google rates the Dune Boutique in Harwich Port, which its listing calls ‘the flagship store for Dune Jewelry & Co.’, 5.0 from 15 reviews⁹, and the Norwood studio 4.6 from 42¹⁹; a Yelp review calls the Harwich Port shop a ‘great jewelry store, right on Main Street’³¹. We found no Trustpilot profile for dunejewelry.com — only one for another company, dunelace.com¹⁷ — and its BBB profile in Norwood is not accredited²⁰. We’re still checking Trustpilot and the BBB by hand.

We found no recurring complaint pattern in the results Google showed us. On Dune’s own product pages, the Rope Seven Sand Ring has 34 reviews; one buyer wishes its two large stones were closer in size but calls it ‘a gorgeous piece’¹². A blogger who reviewed Dune notes that all its items have a lifetime warranty³².
